Musings of a Hemi-Sync® Explorer – July 2026

What We Mean by Consciousness

Dear Explorer,

For nearly 30 years, philosopher David Chalmers has challenged scientists with what he famously referred to as the “hard problem of consciousness.” We can describe what the brain does, he argued, but we still cannot explain why there is something it is like to be conscious. Why should electrical activity in the brain be accompanied by the felt experience of seeing the color blue, falling in love, or listening to music?

But more recently a growing number of researchers have begun arguing that perhaps the hard problem was never really hard at all. Consciousness, they suggest, is simply computation. Given sufficient complexity, subjective experience emerges. Mystery solved.

It’s an elegant argument, and if we accept that definition of consciousness, they may well be correct. We have already built machines capable of reasoning, creating, conversing, and solving problems in ways that increasingly resemble our own minds. It seems entirely plausible that one day we will create artificial beings that convincingly express fear, joy, grief, curiosity, even compassion. We may eventually construct synthetic people whose personalities and behaviors are so faithful to their biological counterparts that, from the outside, the distinction becomes almost meaningless.

But I wonder if we’ve quietly changed the question. Rather than explaining consciousness, we’ve redefined it. Intelligence, behavior, emotion, memory, self-reporting—even the subjective claim “I am conscious”—may all be products of sufficiently advanced computation.

But the explorers of consciousness throughout history have pointed toward something that cannot be so easily reduced. They speak of an intelligence that doesn’t merely think, but knows; a guidance that seems to arise from beyond the personal mind; a connection to purpose, subtle energies, and what many traditions simply refer to as Source.

Thinking and knowing are not the same process. Thinking unfolds sequentially. It is analytical by nature, moving from one premise to the next, comparing, categorizing, calculating, and drawing conclusions over time. It is an extraordinary tool, but it is fundamentally linear. Knowing, by contrast, arrives all at once. It is immediate—a direct perception that precedes analysis rather than resulting from it. We have all experienced moments when the answer appears before the reasoning, when an insight, intuition, or profound recognition presents itself fully formed, and only afterward does the thinking mind begin constructing an explanation.

If thinking is the mind assembling a map, knowing is standing on the mountaintop and seeing the entire landscape in a single glance. Perhaps consciousness, in its fullest expression, is less about becoming a better thinker than about becoming more deeply attuned to this capacity for direct knowing.

Could we create an artificial person that perfectly imitates a human being? I suspect we will. Could we create one that discovers its own Higher Self? One that genuinely receives inner guidance rather than simulating it? One that awakens to Source rather than merely describing it? Those are very different questions, yet they seldom appear in today’s debate because they lie outside the definition of consciousness currently being proposed.

If you define consciousness narrowly enough, perhaps the hard problem disappears. But perhaps what disappears is not the mystery of consciousness, but consciousness itself.

As explorers, we’re fortunate that we don’t have to resolve this philosophically. We can investigate it directly. For others though, direct perception may reveal uncomfortable truths.

Grief is often thought of as something to overcome, but perhaps it is better understood as something to move with. Like the tide, it has its own rhythms—moments of stillness followed by unexpected waves of emotion. Ebb and Flow: Meditations for Grief Support gently reminds us that healing isn’t about leaving grief behind, but about discovering that love remains even as loss changes its form. Guided with compassion by Bren Seed and supported by Hemi-Sync® frequencies, this meditation offers a safe space to honor the natural movement of the heart and find peace within the changing currents of life. For more on how flow states can rewire a grieving mind, be sure to check out Episode 47 of the Focusing In podcast.

As you recline under her radiant glow, nurturing light envelops you, providing guidance, love, and healing. Open your heart to her wisdom, and you’ll receive insights through thoughts, feelings, or images. Modern physics has revealed a universe woven together by invisible fields that underlie the material world. Spiritual traditions have long pointed toward a similar understanding—that beneath the apparent separation of life lies a unified reality from which everything arises. The Field with Hemi-Sync® by the incomparable Barry Goldstein, is an invitation to explore that possibility for yourself, allowing expansive soundscapes and Hemi-Sync® frequencies to guide you into an experience of profound interconnectedness, where awareness seems to extend far beyond the boundaries of the individual self. Barry explains how music connects us to the field of infinite potential in Episode 51 of the podcast.

In Case You Missed It

It’s been a busy few months for the podcast, so we have one more to tell you about. Joel Fotinos, VP and editorial director of St. Martin’s Press, talks about mastering manifestation using Napoleon Hill’s principles in Episode 49. It’s essential content for anyone interested in breaking into authorship, books, conscious media more broadly or manifestation, in general.

That’s all for now. See you in Home or along the way,
Garrett
