“To be yourself in a world that is constantly trying to make you
something else is the greatest accomplishment.”
―Ralph Waldo Emerson
American essayist and poet
Self-confidence is the ability to be yourself, trust yourself, and maintain a positive, realistic self-image. Defined as belief or trust in oneself or one’s own abilities, self-confidence is the difference between feeling capable or vulnerable. It gives us the ability to handle criticism, make our own decisions, achieve emotional security, get through life’s daily ups and downs, and make a myriad of decisions while keeping a healthy, optimistic outlook on our lives and our futures.
Self-confidence is really about self-perception. What we believe about ourselves – whether it’s what we hear from others or it’s what we tell ourselves – becomes our reality, whether positive or negative.
Maintaining a healthy level of self-confidence takes some effort for most people. Thinking positive thoughts (instead of getting upset), focusing on your strengths (instead of your weaknesses), and rewarding yourself when you’ve done well are recommended ways of increasing self-confidence.
A number of Hemi-Sync® titles can be helpful in promoting positive thoughts and a positive self-image.
Part of building self-confidence is making a regular, conscious effort to letting disappointments, irritants and unpleasant realities go. Emerson offers us some wise advice for doing so:
“Finish each day and be done with it. You have done what you could. Some blunders and absurdities no doubt crept in; forget them as soon as you can. Tomorrow is a new day. You shall begin it serenely and with too high a spirit to be encumbered with your old nonsense.”
—Ralph Waldo Emerson
